Rules and Regulations 2017-2018

Dear Parents/Guardians

The start of a new school year is an important time for both parents and students to (re)acquaint themselves with the beliefs and values that underlie

the Jesus & Mary School Rules and Regulations.

In addition to upholding the JM values and behavioral standards, observance of the Rules and Regulations will help ensure that all students

thrive in a fair, caring, and disciplined environment where they feel safe, respected, and valued and become responsible, self-disciplined individuals.

We therefore invite you to carefully read the Rules and Regulations of the Elementary II Division, discuss them with your child, and express

your commitment to these rules by signing the return slip below and returning it to the Division Supervisors by Monday, October 9, 2017.

Thanking you for your trust and wishing you a blessed year,

Yasmine Chartouni

Rules and Regulations 2017-2018

A.    Uniform:

Order, equality, and discipline are among the virtues promoted by Jesus & Mary School. The school uniform is essential in that it helps students acquire the above and develop their sense of belonging to the school community.

The school uniform, as detailed in the enclosed Appendix A is divided into two parts: the regular and the official uniform.

Students failing to wear the correct uniform will be given a letter specifying the non-conforming uniform item(s) and will be asked to comply with the rules.

Second time offenses will be regarded as deliberate, and the concerned students’ parents will be asked to send the proper uniform from home.

Further offenses will be dealt with firmly, and points will be deducted from the Student Behavior Contract.

B.    Tardiness and Absence:

Punctuality is a virtue to be developed and observed by all as it reflects self-discipline and respect for others.

         Students are expected to be

o    In the Assembly Hall before 7:45 a.m. every day

o    In class by the 2nd bell after recess

Late students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to see the Principal who will then issue a Permission Slip to enter class.

Repeated tardiness will be regarded as deliberate and will be dealt with accordingly.

Tardiness on the day of an assigned test or exam is not allowed.

In case of absence, parents or guardians of the absent student are urged to call the Division Principal to specify the reason of the absence.

A medical report from the treating physician is required for any absence of more than two school days.

Absences from exams are unacceptable. A written medical report is then required.

Absent students will be required to sit for a make-up exam on an appointed day. Similarly, students will be required to sit for a make-up test in case they are absent for a daily assessment.

A student may sit for a maximum of three make-up tests/exams during any one term.

C.    Transportation:

Since our priority at Jesus & Mary school is the students’ safety and well-being, students are not allowed to leave school before the closing bell or leave with anyone other than their parents without a permission from the Division Principal.

Kindly note that students are not allowed to change bus due to seating limitation and safety precautions.

Bus transportation policy will be sent soon.

D.    Classroom Rules:

School is a community in which all thrive in mutual respect. Respect at Jesus & Mary is three-fold: All members of the community are invited to develop self-respect, respect for others, and respect for school property.

Eating, drinking, chewing gum, writing on desks and walls, and using any electronic device are not allowed in class.

Students are expected to be in class before the teacher comes in, and they are expected to refrain from visiting other classes or circulating in the hallway between classes. Students who are late to class will be given a Disciplinary Slip by the teacher.

Permission to leave class is granted by the incoming teacher.

The parents of students suffering from a particular condition requiring special attention are asked to inform the Principal of the matter so that the appropriate measures may be taken.

Students are expected to respect and take care of school property at all times. They will be penalized for any damage to or loss of school property or equipment such as rented books, desks, walls, doors, lavatories, and so on.

E.    Discipline:

The sole purpose of all the Jesus & Mary rules and regulations is to help students develop their full potential and become self-disciplined role models for others. Discipline is designed to encourage and celebrate positive behavior as well as to effectively guide students to recognize and move away from any disruptive behavior.

Jesus and Mary School students are expected to observe a decent composure that reflects their upbringing and JM belonging at all times and in all circumstances. Any inappropriate behavior will be dealt with accordingly.

A student behavior contract will be agreed upon by the Principal and the pupils.

A credit of 20 points will be granted at the beginning of the year, and the corresponding sheet will be attached to the agenda.

Each change occurring on this sheet will have to be signed by the parents, the Principal and the student.

A student can gain one or more points when s/he does a remarkable deed.

• At the 1st incident:

The student will be given an oral warning.

• From the 2nd incident onwards:

· The teacher will notify the supervisor who will report it to the Principal.

· The Principal will deduct a point or two depending on the nature of the misconduct.

· The student will then be asked to make amends for her/his misdeed, and the parents will be notified.

When the student reaches a total of 17 points:

S/he will have to fill in a behavior record sheet with the supervisor where s/he will describe the latest misbehavior, why and how s/he lost the points, and how s/he will try to regain them. This will be dated, signed by the student’s supervisor, the parent and the Principal, and kept on file.

When the student reaches a total of 15 points:

S/he will be sent to the Principal.

When the student reaches a total of 14 points:

The parents will be called in for a meeting with the Principal to discuss the student’s discipline file in order to provide better help for the student and discuss the measures to be taken.

When the student reaches a total of 13 points:

S/he will receive an oral warning.

When the student reaches a total of 12 points:

A warning letter sent to the parents/guardian.

S/he will receive a warning letter sent to the parents/guardian.

Any disciplinary infraction thereafter will lead to a detention and other measures deemed appropriate.

** The above procedure may be overridden in the event of very serious offences.

** The student can regain 1 point within two weeks of losing it if s/he respects the rules and regulations and if her/his behavior toward the person offended has noticeably improved.

** Further points can be gained if the student does a noteworthy deed.

** The student whose behavior contract shows no deductions during a given term will be congratulated at the end of that term.

** At the end of the School Year, students who maintain their credit points will be rewarded for their exemplary behavior.

F.    Written Work:

At Jesus & Mary, assessment and evaluation are comprehensive and continuous. Thus, every item of student work is valued.

·         All written work must be submitted on time, neat and tidy.

·         The use of correction pens (Tipp-Ex) is not allowed.

·         Written work, unless otherwise specified, should be personal.

·         In case assigned work is repeatedly not submitted on time, the teacher will

o    Talk to the students and give a verbal warning

o    Write a note on the agenda

o    Refer to the parents

·         In Grade 6, in order to further reinforce the students’ sense of responsibility and organizational skills, the student who does not submit her/his work on time repeatedly will, in addition to the above, have a deduction of one point on her/his behavior contract.

G.    Circulation in and out of the Division:

Jesus & Mary students are recognized by their demeanor, politeness and compliance with the rules.

Students are expected to be silent during Assembly, on the stairs and in the hallways.

Students are requested not to be in the classrooms during the breaks and before classes start.

Students changing classrooms are to be accompanied either by the teacher in charge or by the Supervisor.

Permission to leave the division building is granted by the Principal or the Supervisor.

Permission to leave school before the closing bell is granted by the Principal.

Students wishing to go to the Infirmary should obtain a Permission Slip from the Supervisor and return it duly filled and signed by the nurse on duty to the Supervisor; then, upon their return to class, they should show it to the teacher.

H.    Dishonesty:

Honesty is one of the fundamental values at the heart of the Jesus & Mary School ethos which all Jesus & Mary School members strongly advocate. At Jesus & Mary, dishonesty is a serious offense and is not accepted in the Elementary II Division. Dishonesty may take the form of copied homework, lying, cheating in tests and exams, etc

All forms of dishonesty will be dealt with promptly by the Division Principal, in consultation with the concerned adult (teacher, staff member and others).

Whenever a student is caught cheating by the test/exam supervisor, the school reserves the right to take away the paper and consider the test/exam invalid, or allow the student to continue her/his work, depending on the gravity of the offense. In any case, a minimum of 25% will be deducted from the test/exam grade.

Repeated cheating may lead to immediate suspension or expulsion from the school upon the Rector’s decision.

I.      Non-academic Classes:

At Jesus & Mary, education is holistic. Thus, the importance of all non-academic classes and activities is recognized and valued.

All students are expected to attend and participate in non-academic classes.

Only students who have a medical report will be exempted from P.E. classes.

J.     Mobile Phones:

Mobile phones may be useful communication tools. However, they are an unnecessary distraction at school.

The use or display of mobile phones is categorically prohibited during school hours.

P.S. The school is not responsible for the loss or theft of valuables.

The School Rector reserves the right to overrule any or all of the above rules and regulations.
